The castle itself is largely gone, absorbed into the railway station in the 19th century, but the Elizabethan ramparts that replaced its medieval walls survive almost complete - one of the best-preserved examples of Elizabethan town defences in the country. A full circuit takes under an hour and delivers views over the town, the Tweed and out to the North Sea.
The full ramparts walk - reviewers say it beats the castle ruins themselves for both scenery and sense of history.
There are sheer, unprotected drops in several places along the upper ramparts, with signs warning of it - keep a close hold on children and dogs, and note that you can't actually get into what remains of the castle itself.
Reviewers consistently rate the free walk along Berwick's ramparts and walls highly, describing them as some of the best-preserved Elizabethan defences in the country with excellent views over the town and river. Several note that the castle ruins themselves cannot be entered, so the appeal is really the surrounding walls and walk. More than one reviewer flags the sheer drops along the upper ramparts as something to watch closely with children or dogs.
“The ruins and the ramparts provide a lovely walk around the city. We just did the section overlooking the sea. You cannot access the ruins. Wonderful views to be had.”— Shabby B, visitor review
