Not much of Bramber Castle survives beyond a single fragment of gatehouse tower, but the motte-and-bailey earthworks and the ditch walk around them make for a proper wander, with views across the Adur valley. It's free and open around the clock, alongside the church next door.

Worth the trip

The defensive ditch walk that loops the whole site - steep and uneven in places, but reviewers say it's the part worth making time for, not just the tower.

Before you go

Parking near the site is tight and tricky - most visitors park in the village and walk up past St Nicholas Church instead. Go in expecting a small site, not a substantial ruin.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.5 / 5 across 955 Google reviews

Reviewers consistently value the free, open access to this small motte-and-bailey ruin and its views over the South Downs, often combined with a walk around the old moat. The recurring practical note is that the approach road and car park are in poor condition, so several suggest parking in the village and walking up instead.

“A childhood haunt that was lovely to return to. A lovely open space to walk, explore or just have a picnic. The gatehouse tower ruins and the ancient church always delight.”— Nigel Sadler, visitor review
