A free ruin near Loch Leven, open only on set days between April and September rather than year-round - several reviewers arrived expecting an always-open site and found it locked, so this is one to check before setting out. When it is open, there's access into the towers and up a flight of restored stairs.

Worth the trip

The restored tower with new windows and roof - a small but genuine glimpse of what the whole building once looked like, rather than bare stonework throughout.

Before you go

Opening days are limited (April to September, set days only) and not obvious from the outside, so check Historic Environment Scotland's website before travelling rather than assuming it's open.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.2 / 5 across 159 Google reviews

Burleigh Castle's reviews repeatedly flag the same practical issue: opening hours are inconsistent and several visitors arrived to find it closed, while parking near the site is limited or non-existent, with one reviewer having to turn around and find a spot on a nearby street. On the plus side, reviewers enjoy the peaceful woodland walk to reach it, the well-preserved sections of the ruin, and the Loch views, and it's noted as good for dogs and kids to run around. It's free to visit, though checking opening times in advance is clearly worthwhile.

Free; open Apr-Sep on set days

“not open everyday, I thought this was abandoned and open 24 hours. so I could onlu take outside photos. No pave to park either. Not even a Grass field to use.”— Amy F., visitor review
