Built by Dafydd ap Gruffudd, brother of the last native Welsh prince, and now free to visit under recent Cadw guardianship - the woodland setting is genuinely overgrown rather than a manicured heritage site.
The sense of a real hilltop adventure, half-hidden in the trees rather than presented as a polished museum stop.
It's a short, steep eight-minute walk from free parking near the war memorial on the main road - information boards on-site fill in the history once you're there.
Visitors consistently describe Caergwrle as a free, atmospheric ruin reached by a short, easy walk, with several enjoying its hidden, overgrown character and the historical information boards on site. A couple of reviewers note the stonework is uneven and can be slippery when damp, so care and good footwear are recommended when exploring. Otherwise the reviews are uniformly positive.
Hilltop castle of Dafydd ap Gruffudd; recent Cadw guardianship; free
“Free ruins, so well worth a look. Easy walk, about 8 minutes. Steep at first, but good track. Free parking on main road and walk to opening near war memorial. Lovely and quiet, nice views, and interesting boards with…”— Luckiwi, visitor review
