A round, drum-shaped Device Fort built for Henry VIII to guard the approach to Southampton Water, later repurposed as a base for early seaplane trials — a detail the exhibits inside cover alongside the Tudor defences. It sits on a shingle spit with beaches either side, popular for a walk regardless of whether the castle itself is open.

Worth the trip

The seaplane history exhibit — an unexpected layer on top of the Tudor fort, covering Calshot's role in early aviation.

Before you go

It's not dog-friendly inside the castle itself, though the surrounding beach and spit are popular with walkers; there are a fair few steps, so it's worth taking slowly if stairs are difficult.

Reviewers enjoy Calshot's coastal setting, sea views and the seaplane history exhibit, with the on-site cafe getting a repeated mention. A couple note there are a lot of steps to reach the top, worth bearing in mind for those with mobility issues, and one visitor found the castle building itself closed on their visit, though they could still walk around the grounds.
