A Norman castle rebuilt and re-fronted across five centuries — Elizabethan windows punched into medieval walls, with evidence of even earlier activity on the site — paired with a working tidal mill on the millpond below, one of the last of its kind in Britain. A single ticket covers both, and dogs are welcome throughout the castle.

Worth the trip

The tidal mill, included free with castle admission — reviewers rate it as remarkable value and a rare survival in its own right.

Before you go

QR codes around the site carry the history in place of dense information boards, which reviewers find easier to follow; allow time for both castle and mill, as some conservation work means a few areas may be closed off.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.7 / 5 across 3,270 Google reviews

Visitors consistently rate Carew Castle & Tidal Mill highly, praising the value of having the tidal mill included in the entry price alongside the castle itself. Several note it's dog friendly throughout and the on-site cafe is a nice addition, with QR codes and information panels helping bring the history to life. One reviewer mentions ongoing conservation work has closed off a few areas, but this doesn't detract much from an otherwise well-preserved and enjoyable site.

“Rather spectacular castle remains - QR codes dotted around help tell the story.”— Segar Volkov, visitor review
