Castle Fraser is one of the largest tower houses in Scotland, with a core dating back to 1450, and reviewers consistently rate the interior as feeling more lived-in and authentic than similar National Trust properties nearby. The walled garden and woodland walks are substantial enough that several reviewers have visited repeatedly without going inside at all.

Before you go
The tower stairs are steep, worth knowing if that's a concern. Parking costs £5, and the cafe runs at the higher end for this type of site.
Visitors consistently praise the knowledgeable, friendly staff and the beautifully presented, lived-in feel of the rooms on the self-guided tour, along with the gardens, tearoom and gift shop. A couple of practical notes recur: the tower stairs are steep and unsuitable for those with mobility problems, and paid parking on top of the entrance fee irritates at least one visitor.
