A ruin on a natural rocky mound in a loop of the River Clun, founded shortly after the Norman Conquest to project royal authority into this stretch of the Welsh Marches. It's a short, slightly uneven climb up from the small car park, with views over the town rewarding the walk.
The setting above the river bend, which reviewers rate as highly as the ruins themselves for the views back down over Clun.
The path up is gentle but uneven in places, so wear proper footwear rather than trailing shoes; it's free to enter and most visitors treat it as a quick stop rather than a lengthy visit.
Reviewers consistently highlight the views over the valley from the hilltop ruins, reached via a short but somewhat uneven climb from the town. The site isn't wheelchair accessible because of the hillside path, and ongoing maintenance work has restricted access to parts of the ruins at times.
“Old ruins. Free access. Perfect for little walk around castle. Nice, quiet surroundings.”— Ellie, visitor review
