The largest Norman keep to survive anywhere in Europe, built on the foundations of a Roman temple and now run as a museum charting Colchester's Roman and Norman history side by side. The interior has been fully converted into modern exhibition space rather than left as bare stone rooms.

Worth the trip

The scale of the keep itself — even reduced to a fraction of its original footprint, it's still the largest of its kind on the continent.

Before you go

Some of the more interesting areas, such as the Roman vaults, are only accessible on a paid guided tour on top of the entry ticket, which a few reviewers feel tips into expensive — decide in advance whether you want the full experience or the standard visit.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.5 / 5 across 3,440 Google reviews

Reviews are mixed on value: while the museum's Roman and Civil War artifacts, BSL accessibility, and surrounding park are praised, a couple of recent reviewers felt the ticket price was high relative to how much of the castle is actually open to visitors, with guided tours costing extra and one family of four paying around £50. Reviewers who focused on the grounds and general visit, rather than value for money, were more positive.

Largest Norman keep in Europe

“Colchester Castle park is beautiful. Will visit the castle soon. But the grounds are great, and I recently went to an event there. Indulged in an ice cream from the cafe. Yummy.”— Alice D, visitor review
