Glasgow's only medieval castle, built around 1400 and still standing on high ground a few miles from the city centre, with a defensive ditch still visible around it. Entry is free year-round, and the climb up wrought-iron stairs to the tower top rewards with views over the city.

Worth the trip

The climb to the top via the internal stairs - steep enough to feel like an achievement, with a genuine medieval toilet along the way that amuses kids and adults alike.

Before you go

It's free and open until 5pm; park on the street adjacent and it's a two-minute walk in, but the stairs to the top aren't for anyone nervous of heights.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.4 / 5 across 415 Google reviews

Recent reviews on file are all five-star, with visitors praising Crookston Castle as an impressive, well-maintained ruin free to enter and easily reached from central Glasgow. Several mention the climb to the top for good if windy views, and its appeal to children with dungeons, turrets and a medieval toilet on show. One reviewer noted the surrounding modern housing estate detracts from the setting and that antisocial behaviour from local youths has been an issue, though this wasn't echoed elsewhere in the reviews.

Glasgow's only medieval castle; free entry; also listed under National Trust for Scotland

“Parking so close by. Nice and quiet since we chose a day when no school had holiday. Good for us. However, a good shop or cafe around could be useful. It was free to visit.”— G S (Mom-G), visitor review
