A ruin on a wooded hilltop reached only on foot, through the deer park at Dinefwr - free to enter once you're there, though parking costs unless you're a National Trust or Cadw member. National Trust owns the land; Cadw maintains the castle itself.

Worth the trip

The 360-degree view from the top, reached via a steep climb and then steps inside the tower.

Before you go

It's a proper walk, not a car-park stroll - steep hill then woodland path - and dogs are welcome, unusual for the National Trust house (Newton House) you can combine it with.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.7 / 5 across 1,859 Google reviews

Reviewers consistently describe Dinefwr as a steep but rewarding climb, with the 360-degree views from the towers cited repeatedly as the highlight. Several mention it pairs well with a visit to Newton House on the same estate, and multiple reviewers note it's dog friendly. No significant complaints appear across the reviews, just repeated agreement that the walk up is worth the effort.

NT-owned, Cadw-maintained; free; reached via walk through Dinefwr Park

“Spectacular views 360 degrees. Walk up to Castle quite steep, but worth walk up. Carpark good. Dogs allowed.”— Foxy 82, visitor review
