The last castle built by a native Welsh prince — Llywelyn ap Gruffudd raised it in defiance of English royal authority in the 1270s, and it fell to Edward I within a decade. It's free, unstaffed, and reached by a steep climb from a tiny car park, which keeps the crowds down.
The view from the top, reached by the steep walk up — reviewers consistently say it's worth the climb.
The car park holds only four or five cars, so arrive early or expect to wait; the path is steep and narrow with uneven ground, not suitable for wheelchair users or anyone with limited mobility.
Visitors consistently highlight the sweeping panoramic views from this free hilltop ruin as the main draw, reached via a short but genuinely steep climb from a very small car park that only fits a handful of cars. Several reviewers flag the path as uneven, narrow, and unsuitable for wheelchair users, so it's best approached as a fit-and-able visit, though everyone who made the climb felt it was worth the effort.

“Fantastic views atop a steep walk from a small car park. Be advised not to touch the lovely presents that dog walkers leave in bags on the ground & bushes (they're-everywhere-you-go)!!!”— S. Peace, visitor review
