A motte-and-bailey castle with a later stone tower added on top of the earthwork mound - a combination that's caused the tower to visibly subside and lean over the centuries, which is now as much the point of visiting as the history itself. It's free, unstaffed and dog-friendly, with a moat still holding water around the base.
The leaning stone tower, tilted by subsidence in the mound beneath it - one of the more striking silhouettes among Scotland's free-access ruins.
There's a dedicated free car park with a small coffee and snack shop, but it only operates in the warmer months - expect it closed and locked outside spring and summer.
Reviewers uniformly enjoy Duffus Castle, repeatedly calling out its distinctive leaning tower caused by subsidence and its free entry as standout points. Several note a small coffee or snack shop operates in the car park, though only on certain days or seasonally, so it's worth checking ahead if refreshments matter. It's generally described as a quick, peaceful stop - kid and dog friendly - rather than a lengthy visit.
Free; fine motte-and-bailey with later stone tower
“This is great castle ruin. It’s built on a man made mound and due to subsidence part of it has sunk. It has a moat and some stunning views. Definitely worth a look if you’re in the area. Dog friendly too.”— Lisa Pearson, visitor review
