The ruin itself is a fragment, but Halton Castle's grounds double as the beer garden of the pub built into the site, so most visits happen with a pint in hand. Reviewers come as much for the view over the Cheshire plain and the setting as the stonework, with open days the only way to see inside the ruin proper.

Worth the trip

The view from the grounds over the Cheshire plain - best enjoyed, by all accounts, with a drink from the pub attached to the site.

Before you go

Table service outside can be patchy at busy times, per reviewers - don't expect a fast turnaround if you're eating in the beer garden rather than the restaurant.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.3 / 5 across 687 Google reviews

Reviews of Halton Castle, now run as a pub and beer garden, are mixed: most reviewers love the views, welcoming staff, and dog-friendly atmosphere, but two visitors were let down by the food and service, citing small portions for the price and inconsistent table service. Fans particularly enjoy the transformed beer garden and drinks selection despite these gripes.

Open days; grounds access via pub

“Love the Castle. Usually go on summer with the kids. But me and Reggie (the dog) nipped in today after a big walk. Staff are always friendly, beers always decent and the view is incredible. Best beer garden in Runcorn”— Brian scott, visitor review
