The largest castle ruins in England, built up over four centuries and slighted after the Civil War, now run by English Heritage with an Elizabethan garden recreated alongside. Reviewers who've also done Warwick Castle down the road tend to find Kenilworth the more atmospheric of the two - quieter, and closer to an actual ruin.

Worth the trip

The ramparts and odd corners you can still climb into, giving a sense of scale that's hard to get from the ground.

Before you go

Arrive before opening and book tickets online - it gets busy. The car park sits across the ruins from the entrance on gravel and grass with rubber matting laid over some of it, so factor that walk in if mobility is a concern.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.7 / 5 across 7,615 Google reviews

Reviewers consistently praise the scale of the ruins and the well-maintained Elizabethan gardens, with one visitor favourably comparing the site's authenticity to nearby Warwick Castle. Practical notes include recommending sturdy footwear for uneven ground and steep stairs to reach the best viewpoints, and one visitor found the audio guide wasn't working, though a printed alternative was available.

“A real slice of history, good access to lots of odd corners, including the ramparts, which was great. The castle is a fine sight from the footpath to the east, very photogenic! Cafe and toilets all good. A contrast to…”— calamitysteph, visitor review
