Built in the early 1600s as a hunting lodge and gutted by fire in 1929, this is now a restored shell — original stonework outside, modern timber floors and a steel spiral staircase inside so visitors can climb through what survived. It sits on the Lulworth Estate near Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, and doubles as a wedding venue.
Climbing the restored spiral staircase inside a genuine fire-gutted shell — an unusual mix of ruin and functioning building.
It's sometimes closed for private events with no obvious warning, so reviewers recommend checking ahead; English Heritage members get in free, and it pairs naturally with a Lulworth Cove or Durdle Door stop.
Recent reviewers were all highly positive, consistently praising the well-kept grounds, the striking mix of ruin and modern renovation inside, and the friendly, knowledgeable staff. Its use as a wedding and events venue means the castle building itself isn't always open, so a couple of reviewers advise checking event listings before visiting.
Restored shell; managed by the Lulworth Estate; also listed under Lulworth Estate (Weld family)
“Large grounds and ruined castle that can be viewed. It's free for English Heritage members. Beautiful landscape with Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door near by.”— Ian Cook, visitor review
