The Keep and Black Gate are what survive of the castle that gave Newcastle its name, run as an interactive city-centre museum with a full year's return access on one ticket. Reviewers are consistently surprised by how much there is inside - turrets, hidden rooms, and stairwells that keep opening onto more.
The view from the keep roof over the city and the Tyne bridges, reached via a genuinely steep climb.
There's no lift, so the stairs to the roof are unavoidable if that's a concern. The ticket is valid for a year, so it's worth treating as two visits rather than rushing one.
Reviewers consistently highlight the value of a ticket that grants free return visits for a year, along with interactive exhibits, knowledgeable guided tours, and rooftop views. The recurring caveat is the large number of stairs with no lift, which several note could be difficult for those with mobility issues.
