Built for Henry II in the 1160s and 70s, Orford's keep is unusual - polygonal rather than square or round - and, unlike many English Heritage ruins, fully intact and fully explorable, stairs and all. A small museum inside holds local artifacts alongside the architectural interest.

Worth the trip

The polygonal keep design itself, one of the earliest of its kind in England, plus the views from the top that reviewers call genuinely stunning.

Before you go

It's not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers - the stairs and dark corridors are unavoidable to see most of the interior - but reviewers with the mobility to manage it say it's well worth the climb.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.5 / 5 across 1,513 Google reviews

Reviewers consistently praise the well-preserved keep and its small museum, with the view from the top a repeated highlight. The consistent caveat is that the interior is reached via numerous steps, making it unsuitable for wheelchairs, strollers, or visitors with limited mobility.

Unique polygonal keep, fully explorable

“Not disabled friendly as lots of steps. Beautiful castle though steeped in 3000 years of history”— Fred bigox, visitor review
