One of the tallest surviving Norman keeps in England, built in stone in the early 12th century and put to the test in 1215 when King John besieged it for two months during the First Barons' War - the corner tower was undermined and toppled, then rebuilt round instead of square, a repair reviewers can still pick out today. The grounds beside Rochester Cathedral are free to explore; the keep itself is ticketed.
