One of the tallest surviving Norman keeps in England, built in stone in the early 12th century and put to the test in 1215 when King John besieged it for two months during the First Barons' War - the corner tower was undermined and toppled, then rebuilt round instead of square, a repair reviewers can still pick out today. The grounds beside Rochester Cathedral are free to explore; the keep itself is ticketed.
The keep interior and the audio guide - reviewers consistently say it's what turns bare stone corridors into a story worth an hour or more.
The castle stays open until 6pm on many days, later than reviewers expect, so there's time to pair a visit with lunch in the town; the grounds and cathedral views are free even if you skip the keep ticket.
Reviewers are consistently impressed by Rochester's massive Norman keep and the panoramic views over the Medway from the battlements, with the audio guide praised for bringing the site to life. Multiple reviewers mention the spiral staircases are narrow and steep, requiring a bit of a climb, but this is framed as part of the experience rather than a complaint.
EH property managed day-to-day by council; also listed under English Heritage
“You have to visit the castle in Rochester, we loved it. Do take advantage of the decent audio guide, it really brings the corridors and different rooms to life. The castle was open until 6pm when we visited, which was…”— David, visitor review
