Sandal Castle's earthworks and stonework are what remains of a Yorkist stronghold, and the site marks the ground where Richard, Duke of York, was killed at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460. It's free, dog-friendly, and quiet enough that most reviewers treat it as a walk with history attached rather than a destination in itself.

Before you go

The car park is small - reviewers put it at anywhere from 10 to 25 spaces - so arrive early or be ready to look elsewhere nearby. The on-site cafe keeps unpredictable hours, so don't count on it being open.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.5 / 5 across 2,603 Google reviews

Reviewers consistently value the free entry and free, if limited, parking, the views over the surrounding area, and the site's connection to the Battle of Wakefield. The on-site cafe is well regarded when open, though it's closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and one reviewer asks visitors not to climb on the fragile remains.

Wars of the Roses battlefield site

“Very peaceful environment, the perfect place to visit when the sun's out. Cafe was great with reasonable pricing. Amazing views all around and clean paths for walking. Ample free parking available and easy to reach…”— Hasan Shahid, visitor review
