The garden Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson began creating from the 1930s onward, around the ruins of an Elizabethan manor - now one of the most influential gardens in England, and the reason people come here rather than for the castle itself, since only the tower and a scattering of outbuildings survive intact. Vita wrote in the tower's upper room, open to visit alongside her library below.

Worth the trip

Climbing the tower - 78 steps - for the view over the garden's famous white borders and rose plantings.

Before you go

Go in late spring or early summer for the gardens at their fullest bloom, and set aside time for the longer walking trails around the estate, not just the walled garden rooms.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.6 / 5 across 6,295 Google reviews

Reviewers are consistently enthusiastic about Sissinghurst's gardens, especially in late spring bloom, with the tower climb and library also highlighted. One reviewer suggests visiting a little later in the day, as the gardens can get very crowded shortly after opening, but otherwise the reviews on file are strongly positive with no other complaints raised.

Elizabethan tower survives; famed Vita Sackville-West garden

“Beautiful gardens. A lovely place to explore, Rach garden room more delightful than the last. Highly recommend on a sunny day 😎”— Melanie Helsdon, visitor review
