The best preserved of the Three Castles of Gwent, and the only one to keep its water-filled moat — the walls are more complete here than at Grosmont or Skenfrith, giving a clearer sense of what the whole group once looked like. It sits well beyond the last village, down single-track lanes, which keeps it quiet.

Worth the trip

The moat, still holding water — reviewers say it's the detail that makes White Castle stand out from its two sister sites.

Before you go

The access road is single-track with passing space for only a handful of cars, so be prepared to reverse if you meet oncoming traffic; there's more open grassland around the walls than the castle name suggests, worth the wander beyond the ruin itself.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.6 / 5 across 989 Google reviews

Visitors consistently describe White Castle as an impressive, peaceful ruin with a notably imposing water-filled moat, and its place within the Three Castles group comes up repeatedly. The access road is a narrow single track with only a handful of parking spaces, which a couple of reviewers flag as something to be prepared for, and there are no amenities on site. Despite these practicalities, the reviews are uniformly positive about the setting and the castle itself.

Best preserved of the Three Castles; water-filled moat; free

“Worth visiting. Stunning ruins in beautiful countryside. No amenities on site and limited parking, but worth a punt.”— Neil Taylor, visitor review
