The best-preserved motte-and-bailey castle in Wales, with a stone shell keep still ringing the top of the mound — it took its name from Wizo, a Flemish settler who founded it in the 12th century. It's a quiet, little-visited site tucked into Pembrokeshire countryside near the Preseli Hills.

Worth the trip

The shell keep on top of the motte — reviewers rate it as an unusually complete survival of this early castle type.

Before you go

Park near the church rather than at the castle itself, then cross a field (often muddy, sometimes with cattle) and climb steps to reach the keep — free throughout, but come prepared for the walk.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.4 / 5 across 111 Google reviews

Reviewers consistently praise Wiston Castle as a fine, well-preserved example of a motte and bailey castle, set in a quiet, uncrowded spot in the Pembrokeshire countryside, and it's free to visit. A couple of practical notes recur: the walk from parking can cross a muddy field, and the narrow gated entrance means it isn't wheelchair friendly. Otherwise, the ruin itself and its peaceful setting are consistently well regarded.

Best-preserved motte-and-bailey in Wales with shell keep; free

“Lovely ruins of a castle built on an even older earthworks nestled into the middle of the picturesque Pembrokeshire countryside. Not far from the stunning preseli hills and not far from Haverfordwest. Well worth…”— Fly, visitor review
