A 12th-century ruin on a hillside above the Thames Estuary, reduced now to fragments of towers and walls but set in grounds English Heritage keeps well maintained and free to wander. The view out over the estuary is as much the draw as the masonry itself.

Worth the trip

The view across the Thames Estuary from the ruined towers, particularly around sunset.

Before you go

There's genuinely not much castle left standing, so go for the view and the walk rather than expecting extensive ruins to explore — it suits a picnic or an evening stroll more than a dedicated history visit.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.6 / 5 across 1,328 Google reviews

Reviewers consistently value Hadleigh for its peaceful setting and sweeping views over the Thames estuary, often visiting for sunrise, sunset, picnics or a relaxed walk — one reviewer even proposed here. A couple of reviewers note there's very little of the actual castle structure left to see, but most feel the atmosphere and scenery more than make up for it.

“Place visited on Sunday afternoon, ideal for relaxing walk with drone on side, full of beautiful views on Thames. Surely will go there in Summer time again, to catch the Sunset.”— Jan Starsky, visitor review
