Nothing survives of the actual castle beyond the earthworks — a Norman motte-and-bailey mound now doubling as a small nature reserve in the middle of Rayleigh. National Trust keeps it open and free, and reviewers value it more for the peace and views than any historical fabric.
The view over Rayleigh from the top of the motte, once you've made the fairly steep climb up.
The motte isn't accessible by wheelchair or pram — it's a proper climb — and reviewers note overgrown shrubs currently block some of the view; the windmill at the bottom is only open Saturdays if you want to combine visits.
Reviewers consistently describe Rayleigh Mount as a peaceful green space with good views, more a nature reserve than a castle since nothing of the original structure survives. A couple of reviewers note practical limitations — the motte isn't accessible for wheelchairs or prams, and one mentions overgrown shrubs partially obscuring the views — but it's still recommended for a quiet walk.
